Do you know that a study has shown just 8% of the people achieve their goals and only 1% of the people in the world, are successful? Have you wondered why? Who doesn't want to be successful, right? But only a few people achieve what they think. Why? Some might say hard work, others might say talent or even luck, but the most crucial thing is the mindset. In his book 'mindset' the author Carol Dweck says, "“We like to think of our champions and idols as superheroes who were born different from us. We don’t like to think of them as relatively ordinary people who made themselves extraordinary.” It's how they see the world, how they treat people around them and how they think during failures and success that makes all the difference. That's what separates successful people from not-so-successful ones. Let's say 2 people are starting a business and are struggling to find clients or get revenue. Person 1 thinks, "It's too tough. It's useless to put in so much work without any results," Person 2 thinks "this is a learning opportunity. I will keep learning and focus on problem solving". Who do you think will be successful in the end? Person 2 right? We cannot say just by being positive, his business will succeed. Maybe his business will fail, but with this kind of thinking, he will go on and start another business. He will apply everything he learned in the first business and work hard on the second business. Suppose 2 people get terminated from a job. In that case, one person might think of it as a failure, and another might see it as an opportunity to get a better job. That is the mindset. So, after a lot of reading and research, I have learned how successful people think and what are the 7 mindsets we can cultivate to be successful. Let's dive into it without further delay...
Growth mindset- You might have heard of this bestseller book called 'mindset' by Carol Dweck. growth mindset is a term coined by this author, she says, "in a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point."
Many times we think A study conducted on 1240 students showed a direct correlation between growth mindset, well-being and performance. Students with a growth mindset performed better in their careers and life. We often think "I don't know this", but if we replace this thought with "I don't know this YET", see how that feels! When you add just a word YET at the end, it tells your brain that you have a chance to learn it, there is something that you can do about it instead of just crying "I don't know this" SO, this growth mindset is the first mindset we all can cultivate. How to do it? Simple. Next time you get a thought like "I am not good at business", add one word at the end. "YET" "i am not good at business YET". Then start looking for ways you can learn it. Mainly believe that you can learn anything if you put your mind to it, no matter what your age or background is. Another sub category in this is learning mindset.. Let me tell you about some fantastic research showing how a learning mindset helps in success. Research has shown that a person with a lifelong learning mindset was better in job performance, got more promotions, and had better job satisfaction. So, along with a growth mindset, we can all try to cultivate a learning mindset. How to do it? Just start learning anything that interests you. It may be related to your job or anything very random, that you liked as a kid. There are so many free courses online and youtube videos, learn from them, make notes, just enjoy the process of learning. Another bonus tip to learn is to teach someone what you've learnt. A study suggests that when you teach someone rather than just studying it, you develop a deep understanding on that topic. You can also create content on it online and teach it to the virtual community.
Not fearing failures: I always like failure stories. That makes me feel like I'm not the only one failing. Everyone has failed, faced rejections, felt terrible, and cried about it. Harry Potter, there's no other fantasy series like Harry Potter. But 12 publishers rejected the author of the books J K Rowling before getting accepted. Walt Disney, was fired from his first job as a cartoonist for not being creative. Michael Jordan, the famous basket ball player was thrown out from the basket ball team in high school. And there are thousands of other stories like this. But you get the idea right? They all stuck with it, day in and day out. They failed, got back up, failed again and kept doing the work.
Arnold Schwarzenegger the famous actor, investor bodybuilder says " So, don't fear failures. What I have observed is that, we often tend to attach our self worth to our success. So, when we fail, we feel like a crap from the inside. That's why we fear failures, that's why we don't take the next step. I have been there, still in a transition phase, so what to do? Keep reminding yourself, that you are worthy, no matter what you do, or what you don't do,. You are just worthy. Talking about self worth is a different topic in itself, let me know if you want an episode on self worth, I would love to do it. But remember, failures don't make you less worthy, instead see them as lessons.
Taking risks and making decisions
We all know that successful people take risks, right? Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, quit his job to start Amazon, Oprah Winfrey, one of the most successful women entrepreneurs risked her financial security to host her own show. I'm not saying you have to quit your job or break your bank but successful people take calculated risks. So, instead of getting stuck in a soul-sucking job forever, we can at least build a profitable side hustle, keep some funds in the bank and quit that job, right? That's taking a calculated risk. Another mindset is making quick decisions. Business owners, or any successful person needs to make many fast, important and challenging decisions every day. How do they do it? It's actually surprising. Researches show that 62% of business executives rely on their intuition to make decisions. So, do you have a gut feeling about it? Then go for it.
Positive thinking
This is a no-brainer. Positive thinking is the most essential mindset successful people have. They always expect something good in the end. They believe that they can be successful. When you start thinking positively, you also reduce the volume of that inner critical voice. Successful people accept themselves, just the way they are. For example J.K Rowling and Bill Gates don't cry about being introverted. They accept that it's their nature, and they accept themselves just as they are. While I'm talking about positive thinking, I'll also tell you about another topic in the trend now- manifestation. Manifesting something means you think about what you want and imagine as if you have already got it and feel it like you've already got it. In other words, daydreaming. Manifestation coaches, please don't kill me, I'm just saying layman's words. Studies show that daydreaming is beneficial in becoming successful. Amazing right? Just start dreaming whatever you want, with your eyes open!
Perseverance and grit
In the book 'grit, the power of passion and perseverance', the author says "Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare". Everyone has enthusiasm in the beginning. Everyone starts a project. But how many people stick to it till the end? Very few. Successful people don't do 100 projects at a time. They do 1 project to the end. They persevere even when times are bad and things are not going so well. In this book there's another quote I loved- "when you have setbacks and failures, you can’t overreact to them." That is when you need to keep moving, you need to pushing yourself to put in the same effort. Lastly, it's not about falling in love, but staying in love. Staying in it for a long time is what matters the most and this mindset is the trade secret of successful people. How to cultivate it? Take short projects like exercising for 15 days straight or reading every day for 30 days. No matter what, stick to it and finish the challenge. Start a small online business or a youtube channel. See that you do it up to a certain stage, even with downs. This is an excellent way to build perseverance and grit
Focusing on the process instead of rewards and outcomes
A study was conducted to see how external rewards affect your internal motivation. This study showed that attaching our success to external rewards, reduces internal motivation by 36%. Successful people always focus on the process. They are not much worried about the outcomes. In other words, they are just concerned with the growth they are making. In her book 'mindset', the author Carol Dweck says "When people change to a growth mindset, they change from a judge-and-be-judged framework to a learn-and-help-learn framework. Their commitment is to growth". So, what can we do? I know it's challenging to do something without being interested in the outcome. Still, we can try to remember to enjoy the process and see how far we've come every day. Don't see how many people are reading your blog, but enjoy the process of writing. Instead of focusing on how your boss will react after seeing that report, try to enjoy the process of working.
Emotional intelligence- In the book 'the courage to be disliked' there's a concept that says, everything in life is an interpersonal relationship problem. If you know how to deal with people, all your problems are already solved. You are not only running a business, you're serving your clients and clients are people. You're not just working for a company, your company is serving people, You are serving people. So, it's vital to know how to handle people to be successful. According to a study, one of the most important mindsets of most entrepreneurial leaders is called the people-oriented mindset. Leaders with this mindset are inclusive, open, positive and appreciative of other people. Now all the introverts out there, I feel your pain, you might be feeling how is this possible. I am an introvert too, so I get it. I'm not saying you have to turn into a people person overnight or start hanging out with many people. You can just try to network with 1 new person every day, genuinely appreciating their work and bonding. I'm sure small actions like this go a long way.
Alright! That's about 7 mindsets of highly successful people and how we can cultivate them to be more successful and happier. Let me sum it up for you! 1. Growth mindset- don't think that your talent and skills are limited, you can always learn and expand your intelligence, the sky is the limit.
